Knights Challenge 5K Run / 1M Walk

April 26th, 2014 by Gary Pappin

October 4th, we will be holding our first annual Knights Challenge 5K Race and 1M Walk to benefit the Hanover Township Food Pantry. We’ve been planning for several months already, and as you might imagine, this will require many hours of preparation and many volunteers.

Tell your family, friends, co-workers and anyone you know that likes to run or walk about our event. Would you like to volunteer some time on race day? Knights and Ladies, we can use more help on committees. Businesses, we are looking for sponsors at several different levels to help defray the costs.

Participants (runners / walkers) will be broken down into age brackets. Top three male and females in each bracket will be awarded medals. Overall male and female contestants will receive special awards. All participants will receive a technical style T-shirt.

Online Registration (click here)

You can also register by mail or in person at the St. John the Evangelist Parish Center.

Mark your calendars and plan to participate in this fun-filled morning to benefit our good partners in the community. Together we can Feed His Sheep through the Hanover Township Food Pantry.

Bake Sale & Pancakes

April 8th, 2014 by Gary Pappin

Our traditional Palm Sunday Pancake Breakfast and Bake Sale is being held next weekend. Join the Knights and Ladies in Kyle Hall from 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM Palm Sunday for some of the best pancakes, sausages, eggs and baked goods in Streamwood.

We recently improved on our menu by adding “made to order” pancakes. You can decide to add toppings such as chocolate morsels, bananas, and other fruit to your pancakes. Top them off with some warm maple syrup if you like as well. Be creative or go with the old standby pancakes. The Ladies will also have a selection of their special baked goods as well so that you can take something home for later in the day if you like.

We hope that you’ll join us for some fellowship either before or after mass. Funds raised from this event help us with our charitable works throughout the year. We’d like to thank Father Ted and all the parish staff for their support of our fundraising efforts. Thank YOU for supporting us as well.

About McGivney Center

LARRY THERIAULT – President, Father Michael McGivney Center for Hope and Healing – Visits Joint Meeting Ladies Auxiliary and Knights of Columbus

Donations to McGivney Center

The Ladies Auxiliary invited Larry and his wife Marge to join a special joint meeting to tell the Knights and Ladies all about the Father McGivney Center for Hope and Healing.  His wife was unable to attend due to a medical emergency, but Larry still made a point of being there to address the audience.

He started by telling us about his background, some of which is included here.   You can learn more about him and the other board members on their website.

Larry went on to tell us that there are currently 14 ladies at the center, 11 babies, 9 toddlers with 3 more babies expected by the end of March.  Recently new babies included two premature births weighing in at less than 5 pounds between them (3 lbs 3 oz. & 1 lb 1 oz).  Happily, babies and mothers are now doing well.

The center has 28 rooms and a basement which was converted from an old convent.   The building had once belonged to the Jewish Federation before it was sold to the Archdiocese.   The length of stay at the facility varies based on need.   Some ladies stay one or two months while others have stayed two or three years.  Classes are held to help the ladies, such as sewing and other skills needed to obtain advanced education, including their GED exams.

President Joni Lorkowski presented a check to Larry from the Ladies Auxiliary, supporting the McGivney Center.  In addition, a set of dishes and blankets were donated.  Larry presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the Ladies Auxiliary for their continued support of the center.

Saint Joseph’s Day, March 19, the Feast of St. Joseph is in Western Christianity the principal feast day of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Prayer to St. Joseph

‘O, glorious St. Joseph, we stand before this Altar with joyful and grateful hearts. We lovingly present to you the labor of our hands and the dedication of our hearts that have fashioned this Altar in your honor. We again place ourselves under your powerful protection. Help us follow your example of complete trust and faith in Divine Providence. Open our minds and hearts to love and serve the poor, the suffering and those rejected or ignored by society. As a family, teach us to love and honor each member of our families with the love and reverence you had for Jesus and Mary. As a nation, inspire in us the will and the way to live in peace with all nations of the world that in our day we can experience the fulfillment of the prayer of Jesus. Peace be to you.

Remember, O most pure spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our sweet protector, St. Joseph, that no one ever had recourse to your protection or implored your aid without obtaining relief.

Lord Jesus, bless this Altar, all this food, the candles, those who prepared it and all those who visit it. We ask this in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
